It seems that the collection We’ll Meet Again – The Very Best of Vera Lynn has outdone the Beatles’ much-hyped remastered albums in order to make Dame Vera Lynn the oldest living artist to ever top the UK album charts.
The album features a number of songs that recall a wartime Britain – “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square,” “White Cliffs of Dover” – which are so time-honored that they actually topped the commercial successes Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys on the charts on Sunday.
Dame Vera released a statement which read in part: “I am extremely surprised and delighted, and a big thank you to all my fans for putting me there.”She had her last No. 1 hit in 1952, and began her singing career before John Lennon was even born.
The Beatles may not have landed an album in the top spot, but the remastered albums settled in to various high-ranking positions on the album chart: 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 21st, 24th, 29th, 31st, 33rd, 37th and 38th.
The Official Charts Company reports that the band’s top selling re-releases were Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Unsurprisingly, the Beatles now hold a new record (previously held by the Monkees) for having the most albums in the Top 10, having placed four there. The Beatles have also beat out Elvis Presley for most albums in the Top 60.
HMV Spokesman Gennaro Castaldo tells the Times Online: “The facts that [the Beatles’ remastered albums] were only out for four days also seems to have counted against their prospects of a number one. This has left the door open for Dame Vera, whose album has been selling consistently in recent weeks and has been steadily growing in demand, to top this week’s chart.”
