Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher has taken to his blog to criticize the number of fans that actually accepted his offer to refund tickets after excessive technical difficulties during a gig in Manchester.
About 20,000 fans were inspired to collect their £45 refund, when after a night of technical problems Gallagher announced that “anybody who has kept their ticket will get a full refund.”
Only about one third of the crowd has sought said refund, though if the entire sold-out venue had wanted their money back, Oasis would have been looking at losses of £3 million.
“So you were genuinely disappointed?” the frontman wrote to the refund-seekers. “There wasn’t a 20,000 gap in the crowd.”
It seems that Gallagher regrets making the offer at all, as well as having announced “this is a free gig from now on” mid-way through the Oasis performance in Heaton Park. The show suffered from technical problems throughout, with a faulty generator to blame; the band had to actually leave the stage in two different instances.
At one point the singer announced to fans: “The generator blew up. If you can believe they run these things on generators these days – what is it, the 1950s? So we had to borrow one from Argos. But it turned out okay. I’m regretting offering you your money back now.”
Obviously the £1 million loss did not sit well with Gallagher, who on his blog called fans that collected a refund “cheeky cunts,” and reprimanded them with “Tsk… some people.”
According to organizers, this concert was the largest event to hit Manchester’s Heaton Park since a visit from the Pope in 1982. The show marked the band’s first performance in the city in some four years, and was planned for months in advance.
