Speaking to BBC 6 music, Epic president Amanda Ghost said that the new music recorded by Michael Jackson shortly before his death will probably be released – eventually.
Ghost said: “We just want to pay our respects to Michael. We don’t want to be seen to be jumping on any bandwagon associated with his death.”
The music icon had been working with producer Will.i.am and artists Ne-Yo and Akon on new music for several years, and it’s apparent from the current music chart that, as Ghost says, “the appetite is there” for new Jackson songs.
“If we do release anything of unreleased material, it has to be fantastic and it can’t damage in any way his legacy or his legend and I won’t let that happen at Epic,” the label president continued. “I have no idea when it’s coming out, but it will come out on Sony/Epic. We haven’t made any decisions because we just want to be respectful for his memory and not be seen in any way as trying to cash in.”
The BBC reports that legal negotiations over Jackson’s estate will also likely delay new Jackson songs from flooding the market.
According to the US chart tracker Nielsen SoundScan, 800,000 copies of various Michael Jackson albums were purchased last week, almost doubling the previous week’s Jackson sales.
