Pete Doherty facing drug charges

Police in Gloucestershire report that Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty is facing drug and driving charges after being stopped earlier in the week.

The 30-year-old musician, formerly of the Libertines, was pulled over when police noticed his erratic driving after a performance Wednesday night in Gloucester. The singer was charged with drink-driving, dangerous driving, possession of a Class A drug and driving without a license or insurance.

Doherty will appear in court at a later date, and a concert previously slated for Thursday night in Derby has been put on hiatus.

Derby Road served as the setting for Doherty’s new drug charges, as he was stopped there in the early hours of the morning.  A thirty-year-old woman who was apparently accompanying Doherty was also arrested for drug possession.

Doherty is no stranger to incarceration, as he has been arrested many times on various charges.  When he violated his probation last year, Doherty was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison.  At that time, he also faced charges dealing with drugs and driving.  He also served some time in prison during 2003 after forcing his way inside the house of former bandmate and Libertine Carl Barat.

Earlier in the week the singer was arrested after being discovered incapacitated beside a needle, in the bathroom on a flight out of London to Geneva.  He paid a fine in order to be released from custody.

“At approximately 12.30am officers on patrol in Eastgate Street saw a car being driven erratically, it continued down Barton Street and was stopped in Derby Road,” said a spokesman for the Gloucestershire police. “A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, possession of drugs and failure to stop for police; he remains in custody at this time.”
