Covering Kate Bush tracks is a dangerous game for any artist. So high is her critical acclaim and so seemingly universal her appeal, that it is almost considered sacrilege just to consider it. Plenty have tried and failed, but here’s a rundown (in no particular order) of the top 10 successful attempts…
1.) MPHO – Running Up That Hill
A soulful take on the classic track from up and coming Brixton artist MPHO – it’s nice when the voice is left to do the work rather than overdo the instrumentation in an attempt to make the track ‘different’. Great stuff.
2.) The Futureheads – Hounds of Love
No one can resist the energetic spikey charm of these indie Northerners, or their hi-octane cover of Hounds of Love – a good video to boot:
3.) Placebo – Running Up That Hill
Placebo recorded this as part of a bonus covers CD for the special edition version of Sleeping with Ghosts but it was so popular that it’s become prevalent in their live set.
Here it is at Reading in 2006:
4.) Chromatics – Running Up That Hill
A rare cover here from the Italians Do It Better label…even more sparse than the original?
5.) The Puppini Sisters - Wuthering Heights
If you’re going to do it, you may as well cast it in a unique light:
6.) Tori Amos – And Dream of Sheep
This cover is so rare that we can’t even track it down…it’s really good though – contact us if you find it!
7.) Alan Partidge Medley
A red herring or the best Kate Bush cover medley ever to be recorded?
8.) Lady GaGa/Midway State – Don’t Give Up
You love her or you hate her….
9.) Maxwell- This Woman’s Work
Neo Soul R&B singer Maxwell performs his classic cover version of the Kate Bush song:
10.) China Drum – Wuthering Heights
And for those who need music on the heavier side:
