Global X Factor in the works

In a recent interview, Simon Cowell told GQ magazine of his plans to take the ITV talent program global, via the internet. Cowell is getting together with Sir Philip Green for the project, a retail tycoon whom Cowell describes as having “show business in his blood.”

The two are plotting to post two shows online each week, which will be available to the worldwide masses on a pay-per-view basis. The pair is currently in talks with a major venue in Las Vegas where the program would be filmed, according to BBC news.

Sir Philip also spoke to GQ, saying of the planned venue: “We’ll have a permanent place. The home of X Factor – live from Las Vegas. We’ll have a store. And it’ll be online. Vegas is tailor-made for this show. You get to the final 12, your dreams come true – you’re going to sing in Vegas.”

The owner of the Arcadia Group – which runs such ventures as Top Shop and Miss Selfridge – and Cowell went on to tell the magazine that if the Vegas venture was a success, they would go on to create similar X Factor contests in other countries.

Cowell is a proponent of the Grand Prix races developed by Bernie Ecclestone of Formula One. He said: “I like the model of what Bernie Ecclestone has done. The Singapore race is as good as the French race is as good as the English race.”

The X Factor judge – who is also featured on the panel of US program American Idol – was named by Forbes.com as American television’s highest earner. Cowell is estimated to have made $75 million (£44.7 million) during the period between June 2008 and June 2009.
