According to Reuters, a music website based in the US is being sued by the Beatles’ label, EMI. The label claims that BlueBeat.com was selling unauthorized Beatles songs online.
A spokeswoman for the label said: “EMI has not authorized content to be sold on BlueBeat.com.”
The label confirmed that it did indeed file a suit in the US, citing copyright infringement, earlier this week. The website in question offers tracks for about a quarter of what they are worth on iTunes, at 25 US cents each.Apparently a wide-ranging list of Beatles songs was being offered by BlueBeat, in both their original and recently remastered varieties. The Beatles are famously among the bands that have yet to agree to their catalogue being released online via any music provider.
Paul McCartney once mentioned that the band was in fact aspiring to make that catalogue available online, but so far negotiations have not gone forward. A settlement that took place between Apple and the band’s Apple Corps Ltd had inspired hope in fans that Beatles tracks might actually make it online. According to McCartney, what now stands in the way of the Beatles’ online sales is a dispute between the band and EMI. McCartney claims the label wants “something we’re not prepared to give ‘em.”
