Ailing economy shuts down eco-festival

The recession is taking no prisoners – not even music festivals that hoped to have a positive effect on the environment.  The Outsider Festival is being shut down before it has even begun, and organizers are blaming the recession for the forced cancellation.

The festival was to be headlined by singer Sharleen Spiteri, and it was to take place on the Rothiemurchus Estate near Aviemore – though it is no more.

The Outsider Festival dates back to 2007, when the environmentally conscious festival was first held by organizers who wanted to promote outdoor pursuits as well as live music and arts.  Regrettably, it seems that these are not times to explore new ideas for festivals, and the organizers confirmed this when they posted on their website: “Clearly a recession is not the time to realize this bold new concept.”

Anyone who has already purchased a ticket for the festival will be reimbursed completely, a refund which will include any possible booking fees.

Organizers were saddened that they had to shut the festival down.  They had planned a host of events, including combining live music and DJs with outdoor activities, such as mountain biking and running.  Also planned was a host of “debate and discussion, film, comedy, and food.”

“However,” the website reads, “due to the unremitting economic downturn and audience numbers now projected we feel that we cannot produce an event that provides you with a festival experience at the level that is expected and deserved.”
