Brian Message, Radiohead’s manager, has established his own record label – Polyphonic – and under it artists will be allowed to retain their copyright.
Message has not yet released details, but it seems the company seeks to establish an emphasis on digitally distributed music, much like that of Radiohead’s 2007 record In Rainbows – an album for which fans could select a price to pay for its download.
According to The Telegraph, the label is a joint venture between ATC, a company run by Message, and the management firms MAMA Group and Nettwerk Music Group.
In addition to retaining copyright, artists may get a 50 per cent share of profits – and that share may increase with success rates.
The co-chief executive of MAMA Group, Adam Driscoll, said by way of explaining the basic principles of the label: “We will do whatever is most effective to get an artist noticed. Giving an album away for free may get one million people listening to a new artist.”
No acts have yet been linked to the budding label.
