Music Research: How many records do you need to sell to get to number 1?

Billboard Top 200In the United States last week Taylor Swift hit the number 1 spot with her record breaking album, Fearless, with only 62,000 units! 62,000! That is all it takes these days! The album is also a record breaker, as it has been at number one for a total of 10 weeks, longer than any album released this decade has been.

The album topped the charts ahead of Charlie Wilson's "Uncle Charlie" with 58,000 and The Fray with 53,000 sales in the week. The rest of the chart was under the 50,000 mark, which shows up the declining recording industry in the States! 62,000 sales is the fourth lowest number one since recording of the charts was established in 1991.

For this year so far, sales are down by 12 percent on the previous year (57 million sales), with Taylor accounting for almost 3 million of these on her own! For more Taylor Swift check out some of the videos below, which have gone on to help with the sales of the record breaking album, which is released in the UK on 9 March 2009.
