It might seem a bit naff and dated now, but in the past winning the Eurovision Song Contest was a potential pathway to huge success. Here are ten Eurovision winners who went on to top the charts….

Abba – the Swedish group composed of two married couples sent Europe into rapture in 1974 with their winning song Waterloo. They then went on to become one of the biggest bands in history.

Celine Dion – what a French Canadian was doing representing the Swiss in 1988 is somewhat unclear but she won nonetheless with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi (Don’t Leave Without Me). Celine has since gone on to sell squillions of records and is widely recognised as the biggest female artist of all time.

Dana – the Irish singer was crowned queen of Europe following her success in 1970 with All Kinds of Everything. It sold a million and over thirty singles and albums later she’s still at it.

Brotherhood of Man – formed by writer/producer Tony Hiller, this lot cleared up for the UK in 1976 with Save Your Kisses For Me. The song was a number one around the world and was the top selling single of the year. They rode on its coat tails for a few years after, split up, reformed and are still going to this day.

Johnny Logan – another Irish Eurovision success story who won the contest twice. In 1980 he cleared up with What’s Another Year, and seven years later who did it again with Hold Me Now. Both were million sellers and he continues to perform to this day.

Bucks Fizz – the UK came top again in 1981 thanks to this lot. Making Your Mind Up was the song in question, after which they went on to enjoy three number ones and sell 15 million records.

Sandie Shaw – in 1967 the English songstress shot to fame when Puppet on a String won Eurovision, making her the first British act to win the contest. It went on to shift over a million and became a number one.

Lulu – the diminutive Scot was joint winner in 1969 with Boom Bang-a-Bang. Spain, Holland and France also shared the spoils that year but Lulu, already a successful act, went on to outsell her rivals and then married a Bee Gee.

Vicky Leandros – this Greek singer who won in 1972 with Apres Toi sold over a million copies worldwide of her victorious song which ended up being recorded and released in seven languages.

Linda Martin – another Irish win thanks to this lady’s song Why Me? It was written by JohnnY Logan and became a hit across Europe. Linda has since gone on to become a TV personality in her native Ireland.
