It's meant to be the ultimate in rebellion, but many rockers have been recognized by the establishment and given highfalutin honours. Here are ten musos who've been on the list...

Noddy Holder MBE - the Slade singer who was known for wearing tartan dungarees and screaming loudly throughout the 70s is now a Member of the British Empire. For services to sideburns??

Sir Mick Jagger – so much for being the ultimate in rock’n’roll rebellion! When Mick accepted his knighthood in 2003, he incurred the wrath of his Stones compatriot Keith Richards. "I don't want to step out on stage with someone wearing a coronet and sporting the old ermine," said Keef, referring to it as a "paltry" honour.

Sir Elton John – Elt was informed of his knighthood at the end of 1997, after handing over £20m to the Diana, Princess of Wales, memorial fund from the sales of Candle in the Wind ’97. So technically he bought it.

Sir Cliff Richard – the God-fearing, celibate, roller booting, tennis-playing crooner was presented with his knighthood by John Major. How to make it fee really special eh…?

Sir Paul McCartney – all of the Beatles were awarded MBEs in 1965 but John Lennon was having none of it and sent his back. Macca, meanwhile, went on to get the full sword treatment in 1997.

Sir George Martin – the elder statesman of music production without whom John and Paul would never have achieved what they did was honoured in 1996. Peter Blake, the man responsible for the Sgt Pepper artwork was also knighted in 2002.

Bob Geldof KBE- the former Boomtown Rat is a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which he got from the Queen in 1986 following his work in support of the Ethiopian famine victims. He couldn’t be properly knighted as he’s Irish and therefore not a citizen of the Commonwealth. Everyone still calls him Sir Bob though.

Sting CBE – the yogic bass-playing Geordie became a Citizen of the British Empire in 2003. Presumably the Queen realized that his work with the Police was not of the crime fighting variety…

Norman Jay MBE – became the first black DJ to appear on the honours list when he got his MBE in 2002. Fellow DJ Gilles Peterson said: "It's great to see Jay's name among all those ex-army officers and toffs and Mick Jagger."

Baron Lloyd-Webber – having been knighted in 1992, the master of musical theatre was then made a life peer in 1997. His full title is Baron Lloyd-Webber of Sydmonton in Hampshire and he sits as a Conservative member of the House of Lords.
