Ten Controversial Brit Award Moments

jarviscocker

It'sthe biggest show in the UK music calendar tonight and who knows what it will bring? A room full of egos, booze and live TV cameras has always brought about some interesting and unpredictable antics and tonight will surely be no different. Here are ten controversial moments from previous Brit Awards....

Geri Halliwell's boob falling out (1997)

Just six months after their debut single, Wannabe, had gone to number one, the Spice Girls were pop's hottest property. Their performance at that night's Brits is remembered for Ginger's union jack mini-dress that left little to the imagination. She later slipped into a sparkly red number when it came to awards time...and basically slipped out of it on the way to the stage!

Jarvis Cocker's Stage Invasion (1996)

Michael Jackson's performance of Earth Song was bombastic to say the least, and possibly even messianic. Pulp's cookie lead singer Jarvis Cocker decided to show his disapproval by walking on stage during Jacko's performance and pretending to moon the crowd.

Robbie Williams Offers Out Liam Gallagher (2000)

“So, anybody like to see me fight Liam? Would you pay to come and see it?” said Williams during his acceptance speech. “Liam, a hundred grand of your money and a hundred grand of my money. We'll get in a ring and we'll have a fight and you can all watch it on TV.” He was quickly ushered off stage and, sadly, the event never took place.

Arctic Monkeys Hammer the Brits School (2008)

Sheffield's finest caused a riot when they showed up at the awards dressed in traditional English country and hunting wear. But the controversy didn't end there. TV bosses were forced to pull the plug on their acceptance speech following an abusive tirade about the Brits school.

Russell Brand Gets Risque (2007)

It was always going to be a gamble getting such a loose cannon to host a huge live TV event. References to friendly fire in Iraq, drug use, sexual organs and the Queen all made it into Brand's patter leaving organisers squirming.

Sharon Osbourne Gives Vic Reeves a Tongue Lashing (2008)

With the whole Osbourne clan presenting, Sharon did the matriarch bit when an obviously inebriated Vic Reeves came on to present a gong. Just inches from the mic, she barged him out of the way, saying “Shut up, you're p***ed, p*** off you b******.” Not bad going for prime time TV.

Brandon Block v Ron Wood (2000)

The DJ was so drunk that when his mates jokingly told him he had won an award, he promptly went on stage to get it, right in the middle of Ronnie Wood's acceptance speech. Wood showed his feelings on the matter by throwing a drink in Block's face.

Chumbawumba Soak John Prescott (1998)

“If John Prescott has the nerve to turn up at events like the Brit Awards in a vain attempt to make Labour seem cool and trendy, then he deserves all we can throw at him,” said the crusties. Prescott was not amused.

Joss Stone's American Accent (2007)

Wearing a dress that looked like it had come from the Austin Powers costume cupboard, the Devon-born singer went on to present an award with a bizarre new accent from across the pond. Eh???

Sam Fox & Mick Fleetwood (1989)

Arguably the greatest car crash in the history of live TV came when the page three girl was paired with the ageing rocker to present the final awards of the 80s. The autocue broke down and from that moment the whole show went to the wall. Fox and Fleetwood have never lived it down.
