Currently operating in yet another incarnation after Keisha, the last original member, left the group recently. Over the years the 'Babes have cracked out some fantastic edgy pop including "Push The Button", "Hole in the Head" and "Freak Like Me." Whether the new material lives up to any of that is yet to be seen.

7. All Saints

The closest thing the Spice Girls had to rivals in the 90s. With their combat trousers, vest tops and trainers, All Saints were the infinitely cooler option, with a more urban sound to match. The Appleton sisters, who formed one half of the band, went on to be rock wags after one married Liam Gallagher and the other got hitched to Liam Howlett of the Prodigy.

Most people might think of them as pure pop, but back in the day Siobhan Fahey, Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin were punk fashion students who did backing vocals for The Jam and Iggy Pop. But then Stock Aitken and Waterman got involved and turned them into a unit-shifting pop machine.

The original girl group put together by Berry Gordy at Motown. Led by Diana Ross, there’s was the sound of teenage America in the 60s. With 12 number one singles in America, they are still the blueprint for all girl bands that have since followed.

"No Scrubs," "Creep," "Waterfalls" and "Unpretty" helped this lot shift some 40 million records in the 90s. Sadly Lisa Lopes died in a car crash in 2002.

3. Destiny’s Child

"Survivor," "Bills Bills Bills," "Bootylicious" and "Say My Name" were all massive hits for this God-fearing, scantily clad trio. They sold over 50 million records, then Beyonce went on to be even more massive and marry Jay-Z. Michelle was last seen appearing in Chicago and Kelly had a number one this summer with David Guetta.

American band that made rock history as the first all-woman act that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. Found fame in the early 1980s with their debut album "Beauty and the Beat" considered a "cornerstone album" of new wave.

Manic Monday, Walk like an Egyptian and Eternal Flame made The Bangles were one of the biggest girl groups of the eighties. After rumours of numerous bust-ups the split in 1990 but got back together in 2000 to record the soundtrack to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me."
