With Lady Gaga arriving in Tokyo yesterday, we thought we’d look at how our Japanese friends have influenced pop. Here are ten songs that reference the land of the rising sun…

Mr. Roboto – Styx

From the band’s 1983 album Kilroy Was Here. It reached number 3 on the Billboard chart. The song's chorus features the line, "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto."Domo arigato is one of several Japanese phrases that translate to English as "thank you very much".

Tokyo I’m On My Way - Puffy AmiYumi

Second single by Japanese duo Puffy AmiYumi from their 2006 album Splurge. Written by dexter Holland of The Offspring, but borrowing heavily both lyrically and musically from Dutch rock band Gruppo Sportivo's song “Tokyo.”

Unforgettable Fire – U2

Turning Japanese – The Vapors

1980 single from English band The Vapors. The song's lyrics mainly consist of the singer talking about pictures of his love and is widely believed to refer to the face a male makes during the act of masturbation. However  the band’s singer denied this in a TV interview, saying, “Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to."

Japanese Boy - Aneka

Number one in 1981 for the Scottish singer who becamewell known for the Oriental image she adopted for the song. After her brief foray into pop she established herself as an accomplished singer of Scottish traditional music.
