The New Generation of Girl Power

Lady_Gaga_Intro_Pic

Less mouthy than Amy Winehouse, less manufactured than Girls Aloud or Leona Lewis, and more creatively original than Adele or Duffy. Young, glamorous, eccentric and borrowing heavily from 80s style, a host of new female pop artists are now dominating leaving the more traditional guitar-toting indie bands by the wayside. Here's our guide to the new generation of girl power....

Elly Jackson

One half of electropop duo La Roux. Looks more 80s than anyone actually did in the 80s and turned up to sign her record deal wearing a T shirt emblazoned with the phrase "I'm a C—t” on it. Influences are Human League, Yazoo and Erasure.

One from across the pond. This 25 year old's sassy power pop has received production help from former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler who helped Duffy's ascent to fame. Has yet to make a huge impact on these shores but the climate is certainly ripe.

Ladyhawke

Ladyhawke

The 31 year multi-instrumentalist from New Zealand took her name from the 1985 film starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer. Think Kim Wilde meets ELO. Her eponymously titled debut album is a work of genius. Check it out now!

Bat For Lashes
