Top Ten Legendary Music Videos

Lady_Gaga-Intro_Pic

As Lady Gaga continues to push the boundaries with a 9 minute video for her new single Telephone - which is more like a Tarantiono-esque mini movie than a pop promo – we thought we'd take a quick look at some of the classic videos of all time. Here are ten to chew over....

10. Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love (1986)

Bob in a suit surrounded by wiggling, lipstick coated dark haired beauties playing guitars. One for the boys.

9. Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer (1986)

Sledge_hammer

Claymation, pixilation and stop motion all used to ground breaking effect for the time. Won nine MTV Video music Awards and was number four in MTV's Top 100 videos of all time.

8. Jamiroqui – Virtual Insanity

As Jay Kay boogies away the the floor below his feet is in constant motion while the walls and ceiling stay still. Seeing is believing in this award-winning effort.

7. Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice

Sticking a superstar actor in your promo never does any harm, but seeing the usually sinister Christopher Walken pull off a flamboyant dance routine was a masterstroke of casting.

6. A-ha - Take on Me

Take_on_me

A smash song and a renowned video from Norway's finest, it involved a series of pencil-sketch animations combined with live footage using a process called rotoscoping. Another multi-award winner.

5. Bob Dyaln - Subterranean Homesick Blues

Subterranean_Homesick_Blues

A promo clip from an era before the word “video” even existed, the footage accompanying this song sees Bob standing in an alley holding up and dropping a series of cards containing random lyrics from the song that match the words coming out of his mouth. The idea has since been used by numerous other artists.

4. Michael Jackson – Thriller

Thriller

Like Lady Gaga's latest clip, this classic from Jacko had a cast the size of a Hollywood movie – and at 14 minutes long, it had a budget to match...

3. Dire Straits - Money for Nothing

money_for_nothing

One that epitomises the glory days of MTV, with its groundbreaking use of computer animation. Ironic that the band were actually very anti-video up until this point when they decided to move with the times.

2. Weezer – Buddy Holly

Buddy_holly

Directed by Spike Jonze and featuring the band playing at Arnold's Drive-In Diner from the TV show Happy Days. Pure genius...

1. Duran Duran - Rio

Rio

Epitomising the 80s, this clip showed LeBon & Co dressed in designer suits and poncing around on a yacht speeding across the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean. What it doesn't show is how soiled those suits got after the run-in they had with a couple of sharks.
