Pet Shop Boys Collaborate with Brian Eno?

The Pet Shop Boys are currently basking in the positive reviews of their latest album, the LP Yes, has been receiving, but they may have something a bit more up their sleeve. According to Exclaim.ca, the duo have announced that they have been in a studio with Brian Eno, and together the legendary producer and superlative synth pop band are collaborating on an album.  Word has it that Brian Eno is attempting to “humanize” the Boys’ electronic studio sound.

Quietus quoted frontman and lyricist Neil Tennant on the subject: “We discovered that Brian Eno was in St. Petersburg, and flew over for a few days and we kept going back. This was when we were planning our musical Closer to Heaven, and we asked if he was interested in producing it.
“We did a day with Brian in the studio, and his idea was to humanize the electronics, which was a good idea, we played with keyboards live and it was quite interesting. It all fizzled out, which was a shame really, as we were all quite into it.  I think what Brian does is he helps people write songs, and we arrived with twelve songs.”

And Chris Lowe was sure to get his (however less verbose) two cents into the magazine when he mentioned, “We should have turned up with nothing.”
So it seems, unfortunately, that the band reported that the Eno sessions didn’t work out. However, both Tennant and Lowe are eager to work with the producer again sometime in the future.

According to Lowe, it would be better to meet Eno in the studio with nothing but a blank slate to begin with.  At least, if they were going to walk into anyone’s studio without sheets of prepared songs, it would be that of Brian Eno.  It’s too bad that nothing came of these collaborating sessions, as the results could have rivaled even that of their current songs which were collaborations with Xenomania, like the new single, “Love etc.”
