Pet Shop Boys – It’s a Sin

The Pet Shop Boys song, It’s a Sin was the first single from the band’s second album, “Actually”. The song reached number 1 in the UK charts in 1987 and was also a huge hit across Europe.

In the US, “It’s a Sin” reached number 9 in the billboard charts. The song became the Pet Shop Boy’s third top 10 hit in the US. Their first hit was "West End Girls".

A demo of the song was first made way back in 1984. The production remained similar on the final version, although, it became far more dramatic.

It’s a Sin uses samples from Latin masses and other sounds recorded at churches, including, Westminster Abbey. The Latin passage near the end translates as, "I confess to almighty God, and to you my brothers, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, act, and omission, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault".

It was claimed by shamed DJ Jonathan King that the Pet Shop Boys had actually stolen the melody for It’s a Sin from the Cat Stevens song, "Wild World". The duo denied King’s claims and he won a settlement outside of court which they donated to charity.
