Their album has been enthusiastically received in the UK since March 23, when it was released there through Parlophone/EMI, which has been the band’s label through the decades. The album debuted on the UK Billboard sales charts in the No. 4 slot, a tribute to the fact that the band has managed to evolve enough with current musical trends to produce success, even if at the same time Pet Shop Boys managed to maintain the roots of their synth pop sound and the ideals behind it.
Pet Shop Boys are actually in the midst of celebrating their first single’s 25th anniversary. “West End Girls” was released twenty-five years ago, beginning a long succession of hits that became the reason the synth pop duo was recently awarded the BRIT for Outstanding Contribution to music.
Perhaps working with Xenomania on three of the album’s tracks has a bit to do with the current success of ‘Yes’, an aptly named album.
Chris Lowe told CNN news recently on the album’s title, “We thought that Yes just kind of summed up the theme of the album. It’s a positive, upbeat, euphoric pop album. It’s almost an answer to the question, ‘Is that the Pet Shop Boys?’ ‘Yes!’”
Though the duo remains intensely talented, their last album, 2006’s Fundamental, didn’t make the splash that Yes is currently making in the UK, selling only 46,000 copies in the US (according to Neilsen SoundScan).
